Happy Dog Day Of Hearts!
It truly is a Happy Day of Hearts today at Harmony Farm Kennel And Lamb, here in Monte Lake, BC! I was going to write about some heartfelt practical piece of kennel advice today but instead I am so happy for one of our kennel dogs that I put a congrats on our Facebook page and just want to want to extend our excited gratitude here as well!
Last July we received a morning call from an emotional young gal urgently needing a place to keep her 8 month old intact Pitty pup for 4 days. That afternoon, we welcomed her and a skinny, very rambunctious pup, complete with kennel 'cement' sores, a pull like a train and uh, quite a little attitude! Duke settled in fine but for Jess, well one piece of 'life' showed up after another and for one reason or 10 she wasn't able to pick up her Duke. After a month, I admit I was skeptical. Here she was, very young with limited finances, no job, no place to live herself, no place for a dog never mind an intact Pitbull and she was leaving him with us, a custom care kennel, for who knew how long. Often, I wondered if she would stay the course or walk away from her dog, as we have watched others, when the kennel bill piled up.
I am so proud and grateful to say alas, that young gal was committed to her dog like few people might be, in her situation. In these days of people walking when things get hard and rescues everywhere full of abandoned dogs, Jessica was committed to that little bundle of joy like no tomorrow. She was “determined for him to have the best possible care”, she always said. While she struggled through life weeks went by, months passed and by golly, Jess sent whatever she could whenever she could. In the duration she moved to Grande Prairie to live with her boyfriend Braden and start anew. They lived in a cheap hotel for weeks while they diligently looked for a suitable place to rent that had a yard for Duke and got settled into good jobs... all the while sending whatever they could save, to financially support the care of their amazing dog Duke.
Well Duke isn't a puppy anymore, in fact he has grown into one of the finest Pitty's we've had the pleasure to care for and play with! He has gained good weight, is a blossom of health, loves his hikes and has become quite a little muscle man – and with a great, respectful attitude! His manners are champion and he is patiently, steady and true – alot like his loving dedicated owner. Today, 7 1/2 months later, Jessica confirmed that her Duke will be able to join them finally and will be picked up tomorrow! When I told Gerry the news, his head dropped, he smiled and with a tear in his eye, said, “Wow. That's great news, that is so great for all of them. Jess finally gets her dog back and that little champ is going home -- but I'm gonna miss that little dude!”
Congratulations and Happy Valentine's Day Jessica & Braden, loyal dog owners, honest, refreshingly devoted 'people of the heart' – and to Duke, one of the most wonderfulest 'love bugs' we've had the honour to know! All the very best wishes to all of you, from Harmony Farm Kennel & Lamb!
